Membership at the Islamic Center of Pittsburgh solidifies your relationship with the largest and most established Islamic Institution in the region.  As a Member, you have the right to have your voice heard in the running of the Islamic Center -- thereby offering a greater sense of belonging and ownership -- and have the opportunity to support all the great social services, programs, educational events, activities and services we have to offer.

Please read below for more details on how to become a member, voting rights, fees, deadlines, and more.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why the new rules?
At the last general body meeting and election, everybody agreed that membership and elections guidelines were too confusing and may have attributed to a decline in membership. This year, we want to make things as simple as possible so that everyone knows their rights and responsibilities, and we can get back to focusing on the spiritual and social growth of our dynamic and diverse community.

How much is membership?
Membership for 2015 is a flat rate of $2.15 per person, as we want membership to be accessible to all who want to get involved in the ICP. However, we would appreciate any donation you could also provide to the ICP to make up for this big price concession. We recommend either $20.15, $215, $2,015 or any other amount you can spare.

How long am I a member for and when do I have to renew?
Membership lasts from Jan 1st to Dec 31st of every calendar year. Membership must be renewed by Dec 31st for you to retain membership for the following year. However, the extended deadline to sign up for 2015 Membership is February 28, 2015. Any payments received after that date will go towards Membership for 2016 as you will not be permitted to vote in 2015.

How do I submit my form?
Becoming a member is simple. All you have to do is fill the membership form (on pink paper, available in both our lobbies) and submit both your payment and your form together to one of the staff members in the main ICP Office. Outside of office hours, forms and checks may be mailed or dropped in our mailbox, but please be sure to retain a copy of your cancelled check as proof of payment. Please do not give your forms and payments to other members of administration (i.e. custodial staff, the Religious Director, Program leaders, or Board members.)

I gave some money to the ICP but didn’t fill out a membership form. I thought this would be sufficient. Am I still considered a member?
Payment of fees without submitting a completed Membership form will not qualify you for membership. You must submit both the form and the payment together. We cannot accept one without the other.

What perks do I have as a member of the ICP?
The only perk to membership is the most important perk of being an active and engaged member in any American institution: the right to vote and be heard. With membership, you get to vote at any time during the year. We would encourage you to further your participation by voting on all delicate issues at the ICP. The only way you get a vote is by signing up to membership through submitting the form and payment by the deadline.

Is there an age limit?
Only those aged 18 and over are eligible to become members at the ICP.

I recently signed up for membership and attended a general body meeting but was not allowed to vote. Why was this the case?
Previously, you had to have been a member for at least six months to be eligible to vote.  According to the new membership rules, you must submit your payment and form by December 31st of the previous year (or in 2015, by Feb 28, 2015) for you to be an eligible voting member for the following year, and you may vote at any time once you are a member.  There is no longer a six-month waiting period.

I want to run for the Board at the ICP. What must I do to be nominated?
Under our new membership rules, you must be a member for 2 consecutive years prior to the election date. You must also be nominated by two other ICP members to run in the elections.  The next Board of Directors elections will be in 2017.
