What is Maktab?
A maktab is a primary Qur’ān school, the purpose of which is to teach Muslim children how to read the Arabic language in general and in specific the set of diacritical and orthographic specifics of Qur’ānic Arabic, as well as the proper mode of recitation or tajwīd of the Qur’an. In addition, children memorize portions of the Qur’ān, specific supplications and prayers, or duʿās and adkār, foundational issues of Islāmic law, or fiqh, and basic matters of creed, or ʿaqidah. All of this is done in the traditional environment of the Masjid, sitting on the floor, with instruction directly from the ʿulamā’, while dressed appropriately and observing the proper etiquette with the teacher, Masjid, and other students.
WHO IS THE TARGET AUDIENCE FOR MAKTAB PROGRAM?
The target audience is children from ages 7 through 14 who are from families who wish for more instruction than can be had from Sunday school, but for whatever reason are not willing or able to attend full time Islamic school.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF THE MAKTAB SYSTEM?
The benefits of the maktab system are that a child who attends it will be able to learn how to read the Qur’ān proficiently, while having learned the absolute essentials of Islamic knowledge or farḍ ʿayn. Talented students will have found a track through which they can further their Qur’ānic memorization through an integrated hifẓ program or Arabic language instruction. Furthermore, the Maktab system is uniquely poised to offer certain benefits not found in most other instructional settings. That is because the instruction occurs fully in the sacred space of the Masjid, thus familiarizing it and making it comfortable for our youth. It will build a culture of traditional learning and being for our children as well as instill within them a respect for the sacred Masjid space as well as deeper and more permanent bond with the ʿulama’. All too often, nowadays, we find youth feeling, looking, and behaving awkwardly in the Masjid space. The Maktab system offers a solution for that.
Has the Maktab System Been Properly Implimented Anywhere in North America, or Is It a Theoretical Model?
The traditional Maktab system, or Kuttāb system, as it is referred to in the certain Muslim lands, further west, is a ubiquitous model of Islamic learning throughout the history of Islām and its various lands. The Maktab system is currently running in hundreds of Masjids throughout the UK, South Africa, and even the USA. Dozens of Masjids in the Chicagoland area run a Maktab class currently, and each established Maktab has, throughout the few years that they have been functional, churned out hundreds of Qur’ānically literate young people, who know their basics in a solid way, in addition to dozens of huffaẓ and young people who have gone on to become students of knowledge, scholars, and Islamically-sound leaders in the wider community.
